Metals

Hirst Conservation undertakes the conservation of metals, including bronze, brass and iron objects, ranging from plaques to sculptures.

Our conservators carry out condition assessments, diagnosis of corrosion types and sources using various sampling analysis techniques. Recommendations are then made for the cleaning, repair and stabilisation methods appropriate for each object in its context and environment.

The services offered for the treatment of metals include:

  • Light surface cleaning and removal of surface lying accretions

  •  Removal of inappropriate or severely degraded coatings

  •  Repair and consolidation of damaged elements

  •  Analysis of corrosion products to test for more severe deterioration such as , e.g., bronze disease

  •  Removal of unsightly corrosion products and stains from the metal surfaces where harmful to stability of the object and/or aesthetically displeasing

  •  Repatination

  •  Application of stable and protective surface coatings where required

Some of our projects include:

  • George IV Monument, Trafalgar Square, London - Conservation of equestrian bronze statue.

  • George III Monument, Cockspur Street, London - Conservation of equestrian bronze statue on Portland stone pedestal.

  • Wembley National Stadium - Removal and Conservation of historic, sporting artefacts, including Olympic tablets and 1966 World Cup Plaque
